With over thirty years experience in senior positions in the Australian and American publishing industry, John Southam is renowned for the successful development and profitability of groundbreaking products and distribution methods. Some career highlights include:
 
  • Conceived and launched recipe-focused mass-food magazine, Super Food Ideas in a joint venture with The Hannan Group. Within 6 months this became the highest circulated food magazine in Australia.
  • President and Publisher of Cruising World for New York Times Company, expanding portfolio of NYT Sports Leisure Group.
  • Pioneered sale of magazines in supermarkets in Australia.
  • Joint-ventured Better Homes & Gardens in Australia with Meredith Corporation.
  • In November 2009 was inducted into Australian Magazine Awards Hall of Fame.
Always on the lookout for new and innovative publishing opportunities John should be well and truly retired by now but publishing is in his blood. When he is not pursuing this passion John can be found with a martini in hand deck side the Hawkesbury River or spending time with his extensive brood of children and grandchildren.
 
 
Laura Thomson

Delivering six years of senior managerial experience in the UK, Laura Thomson brings to WW Media well-honed expertise in relationship management, coordination of business activities and project management. When not working Laura has a keen interest in Contemporary Art and travel. In more relaxed mode she is most often found outdoors entertaining her precious pooch at the park or beach.
 
Marijcke Thomson

Marijcke Thomson’s leadership of WW Media draws on skills and experience honed over 17 years in senior executive positions.  With an eye for the different she has left a strong impression on the Australasian publishing landscape. Key achievements include:
 

  • Conceived and conducted due diligence of a premium inserted magazine concept for John Fairfax publications, resulting in 2002 launch of the(sydney)magazine. As launch publisher she was behind the  highly successful first year in which the magazine wrote over $8 million in premium advertising revenue and increased the circulation of the Sydney Morning Herald on insertion days.
  • Managed the ACP Magazines Food and Homes Group and oversaw the successful refresh and brand doctoring of the food, home and travel specialist titles, Australian Gourmet Traveller, Gourmet Traveller Wine, Australian House & Garden and Belle magazine. Managed the launch of Real Living in 2005 achieving a unique and successful position in this category.
  • As publisher of Australian Good Taste Magazine, managed the magazine’s growth to 12th largest in Australia. Also developed the Good Taste Books division with publication of mass market and premium cookbooks.
When not in the office, Marijcke can be found under a coconut tree in Fiji or at the Pilates studio.
 
 

Carla McLaughlin

After starting her career with the Mirror Group in the UK Carla immigrated to Australian in 2001. She made a name for herself in Australia as National Sales Manager for recipes+ magazine one of the countries largest titles which she led from launch into its fourth year.

Following 18 months as an Account Manager at Sensis where she managed a portfolio of key agencies and clients Carla came on board as National Sales Director for Popular Science Magazine. A keen traveller Carla is on a plane whenever opportunity allows, otherwise spot her beach-side in Coogee.

With 10 years experience in print and online media, Kevin Cheung possesses a keen sense of editorial direction, which he applies towards creating environments for lively and passionate conversation. Before moving to WW Media in 2008 to launch Popular Science, Kevin worked at Derwent Howard Media as Associate Publisher for custom publications. At home, Kevin is a techno-geek and sci-fi nut who can occasionally pull off a decent Zoidberg impression. For fun, he enjoys exploring the great outdoors with his camera, shooting all things great and small.


Rhiannon Elston
Editor, Science Illustrated

Rhiannon has worked across many media platforms including online, print and on air. DARE I ASK?; a vox pops series for community TV is one of the many volunteer roles that articulate the curiosity that charges her approach to the media. A multifaceted degree that combines a master in journalism with degrees in psychology and history is fertile training ground for Rhiannon’s role as editor of Science Illustrated magazine, a magazine for intellectual curious men and women that want to know more about their world. When she is not at her desk Rhiannon is most likely to be found behind a microphone or camera gathering opinions from the community at large.
